The importance of language in learning mathematics cannot be overstated. We understand mathematical ideas by making connections between language, symbols, pictures and real-life situations (Haylock and Cockburn, 2003).

The document below shows the new mathematical vocabulary for each year group. With the new National Curriculum  bear in mind that children may have gaps in understanding some of the new mathematical language. 

Talk 4 Number

Following on from the Talk 4 Number training in the autumn term, a whole staff meeting was held at the start of 2016 in order to share good practice. Teachers display mathematical vocabulary in each classroom and children are encouraged to use mathematical language accurately.
