Spoken Language

At Bridge there are a number of opportunities for children to develop their spoken language. Each unit of our Wordsmith scheme of work contains opportunities for oral rehearsal of children’s writing and reflection and evaluation of their work. The live units in particular, are set up to allow children to develop language for different contexts and listeners.

Each week, children take part in ‘Talk it Over’ sessions. Here, children are encouraged to develop, express and justify their opinions and respond to the contribution of others. Topics of discussion arise from a given stimulus and may include ‘Is stealing always wrong?’ or ‘What is happiness?’

In 2015/16, children at Bridge took part in National Poetry Day by memorising and performing a poem by heart.
